How much does tree trimming cost?

The cost of tree trimming is challenging to pinpoint in advance because of the wide range of variables that are very different in every situation. That is exactly why we’ll visit your property to give you a free estimate!

The most important pricing variables are the size of the tree, its location, and the degree of difficulty.  These variables subsequently affect the type of equipment we’ll need to use, the number of workers we’ll need to bring to your property, and the total number of hours necessary to trim the tree.

As you can imagine, there’s a huge difference between how we would approach trimming a very small tree in your front yard with nothing else near it, versus a 100-foot tree spanning multiple properties with branches dangling over power lines, roofs, and skylights. In this example, trimming the small tree could cost as little as $50 while trimming the large tree could cost as much as $5,000. Because of the variability, we prefer to assess the situation in person. Our estimates are always fast, free, and accurate.

How often do I need tree trimming?

The frequency of tree trimming is dependent mainly upon the age of the tree.

  • Juvenile tree’s generally require a 2-3 year trim cycle
  • Adolescent tree’s generally require a 3-4 year trim cycle
  • Mature tree’s generally require a 4-5 year trim cycle

Why is tree trimming important?

One of the best ways to keep your trees healthy and happy is to perform routine tree trimming. By removing the dead wood and thinning the dense areas, we prevent future breaks and give healthy branches room to grow. Though it sounds counter-intuitive, a proper trimming allows a tree to grow to its fullest potential. Without proper trimming, trees will grow too thick and become filled with dead branches. This leaves them vulnerable to breaking in the wind and heavy snows. And we all know how those Denver snows are!

We also trim trees to remove current breaks and safety hazards. Branches that overhang roofs or dangle precariously can cause major damage and should be trimmed immediately.

Additionally, tree trimming is especially important for tree health in the Denver metro area because, believe it or not, this is an unnatural environment for trees. We actually live in a high plains desert environment. If people weren’t living in Denver,  you would see brown grass, buffalo, prairie dogs, and coyotes.  Nearly all of the trees here were planted and come from different parts of the world. We plant them here, water them, and they grow under our intense desert sun.  This tends to enable the trees to overgrow themselves and they get too heavy out on the ends. Combine that with the radical temperature and climate swings we can have here, and you have a situation where the trees need more attention than they typically would in their natural environments.

What’s the best time of year for tree trimming?

Fruit trees and American Elms should be trimmed during the winter. All other trees can be trimmed at any time during the year.

What are the most common mistakes when trimming a tree?

Over-trimming a tree is a common mistake that we see.  A general rule is to not remove more than 15% of the foliage in any one trimming season.

What’s the difference between tree pruning and tree trimming?

In practice – nothing really. It’s just semantics.  Most people in the industry use the terms interchangeably.   However, pruning sounds a little better to the arborists ear than does trimming.
